Founder
Farmer Alfred Melbourne is owner and operator of Three Sisters Gardens and a long time resident of West Sacramento. Three Sisters Gardens is a nonprofit organization bringing community members together to grow food and lives. Their mission is to teach at risk youth how to grow/harvest/distribute organic vegetables and engage the community to get involved in supporting the at risk youth population in Yolo County.
Three Sisters Gardens is based on Traditional Native teachings of protecting our Mother Earth and respecting ALL living things. Their main goal is to give back to the community by inspiring and empowering youth through gardening. Like the Three Sisters legend of companionship planting, Three Sisters Gardens believes that our communities can begin to heal and thrive when all components, the youth, adults and elders are working together as one. How did Three Sisters Gardens start?
Starting from a donated plot, early Three Sisters Gardens volunteers began caring for the land. Disuse had left the soil hard and uneven. Only grass remained but there was evidence of once living tomatillos, hinting at the site’s potential for growing again.
How can I help your organization?
Three Sisters Gardens is a registered non profit organization run entirely from donations, grants and the generosity of our community.
Financial contributions are always helpful, but there are many other ways for you to support the program.
Individuals with skills in clerical support, grant writing , research, social media and outreach leading workshops, farm operations and any applicable talents are always needed and greatly appreciated.

From the start Three Sisters Gardens has been embraced and supported by our local community.
Our volunteers have come from all over and they bring a wealth of skills and knowledge, but most importantly they bring good and positive energy.
